Master “Kommunikation im Raum” (spacial communication)

In the context of the School of Design with the departments of interior design, communication design and media design, our master programme is embedded in an ideal environment for interdisciplinary exchange and creative projects. Small numbers of students in each class allow individual and personal care. There is a lively exchange among students and teachers. Our Master degree programme “ Kommunikation im Raum” has a familiar atmosphere.

Focus “Kommunikation im Raum”
Our Master Course “Kommunikation im Raum” deals with a variety of topics and tasks on spatial communication. We work on spaces where communication and information is expressed in an innovative and creative way. With each project, we are looking for an additional value and relevance in our design task in the context of architecture and design .
Our focus on “Kommunikation im Raum” is the basis for a unique profile with innovative project work. In the context of design- and realization-projects we frequently offer collaborations with industry partners. The results of these projects are well published and rewarded.

Our aims
Authentic spaces are capable of dialogue. Thinking about architecture as a communicative space continues to evolve in complexity, leading to a challenging design expertise at the intersection of space, design and technology.
The program explores topics and challenges of spatial communication. We study spaces where communication and information is expressed in exceptionally designed ways. This includes the study of interactive spaces responding to differing needs, as well as intelligent, communicative media installations, exhibition design and information with content on graphic surfaces. Based on the certitude that content matters and atmosphere values higher than technology, the serious reflection of the communicative aspects of spaces build the foundation for our approach to design.
Contents and Expertise
In the center of each project stands a subject which evolves into complex and trans-disciplinary spatial systems based on conceptual contents. From the project’s initial idea, innovative topics are examined to see how far they correspond to real-life conditions. Then to realize these concepts, all required disciplines are brought together. Students are guided and supervised by a team of professors and lecturers with core expertise in fields including architecture, art, technology, product design, material, lighting, digital media, construction and theory. Using this interdisciplinary approach, the students’ project is discussed from a variety of perspectives and often in cooperation with professional partners from the Rhine-Main-Region. Visiting lecturers from industry as well as international visiting professors add value to this practice-based course of study.

Interdisciplinarity
Interdisciplinary subjects are frequently offered in cooperation with the departments of Communication and Media Design. Students share their studio with other Master students (Gutenberg Intermedia) whose focus lies on various disciplines in the field of Arts. As an implied side-effect, our students train their social and communicative skills in this transdisciplinary working environment as well as their operational abilities in their core competence: specialists for communicative/spatial designs in a team of (other) specialists.

Course structure
The course duration is based on three semesters of 16 weeks each and accounts for 90 ECTS credits.
Structured into seven modules, the programme operates multiple teaching formats (lessons, seminars, presentations, placements, supervised workshops), integrating a historical approach, theory, learning and practice. The first semester is devoted to a practical team project – the second semester explores individual design tasks. For the final Master thesis students work on self-imposed topics in the field of innovative spatial communication
